Health and HIV
Nile Breweries Ltd employees have always been at the
core of the company’s success. To ensure the future of the company, Nile
Breweries Ltd rolled out a comprehensive program to educate the workforce on HIV
prevention measures and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS amongst its workforce
and their families.
To this end a peer education structure was launched
in 2001; KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices) survey methodology was applied
and a sensitization program was initiated. An HIV/AIDS workplace policy was
rolled out in 2002, a modern clinic built, Occupational Health Practitioners
trained, and condom distribution implemented routinely. Voluntary Counselling
& Testing (VCT) and Awareness, Counselling & Testing (ACT) campaigns were
also rolled out amongst other interventions.
In 2002 a prevalence survey was carried out
amongst the workforce and the company started offering anti-retroviral therapy
to employees and members of their families. To date, a large part of the
workforce has participated in VCT and elements of this program have now been
extended to the members of the community of Njeru, close to the company’s
headquarters.
