The river, the beer…
...and a history of taste
|
|
More than four thousand miles in length, the mighty Nile is the longest river on earth. This great waterway has played a monumental role
in the history of the African continent. It traverses an incredible variety of
landscapes, a colourful medley of cultures and, since the beginning of time, has
enthralled civilizations with its power and mystery. |

The Nile River has also played a unique and
historical role in what is now a multi-billion dollar industry – beer. The
oldest known evidence of beer brewing is a 6 000 year old carving on a clay
tablet, depicting beer drinking scenes. It is from waters of the Nile River in Ancient Egypt, that the humble beginnings of beer brewing took place.

Many centuries later, this relationship
between the river and beer re-emerges. Today, four thousand miles inland from
the sea, up this great natural wonder, you will find Lake Victoria
, the world’s second largest body of freshwater. Fed by numerous rivers and
streams around its lengthy shoreline, this huge water mass finally spills over
into a wide ravine at Jinja. This ravine is the beginning of the Nile River
and its great journey to the sea. It is the Source of the Nile
