NBL and Yo-Waste Pioneer Glass Recycling in Uganda

We’re pleased to announce the successful completion of our glass bottle recycling pilot, run in partnership with local tech startup Yo-Waste through the AB InBev 100+ Accelerator Program.

From August 2024 to March 2025, the project collected 63 metric tons of post-consumer glass across Kampala and nearby areas, exceeding our 50-ton target! Though Uganda doesn’t yet have glass recycling facilities, the collected glass was shipped to Tanzania, processed into cullet, and reused in AB InBev’s bottle manufacturing process — creating a circular, sustainable system.

“This proves that even with limited infrastructure, we can build circular solutions with the right partnerships and innovation,” said Njuki Emmanuel, our Legal & Corporate Affairs Lead.
“At Yo-Waste, we bring structure, technology, and visibility to how waste is collected and managed. We’re helping communities understand the value of segregating waste at the source, especially recyclable materials like glass,” said Martin Tumusiime, Co-founder of Yo-Waste.

At Nile Breweries, over 90% of our products are already in returnable packaging, and our breweries maintain a zero-waste approach with recycling rates above 90% at our Jinja and Mbarara sites.
With the success of this pilot, we’re scaling up! Expect to see more collection points, expanded regions, and campaigns to grow recycling habits across Uganda.

Together, we’re building a greener Uganda, one bottle at a time.
